How are you ?
Three words so often uttered,
But very rarely meant:
“How are you?”
“How are you?”
“How are you?”
We ask
But the answer
Is breath miss-spent.
Because nobody cares,
Not really.
Not unless the answer is “Fine.”
Nobody wants to hear the words
“I’m not okay, do you have some time?”
We don’t have time,
Not ever.
Not even for those we love most.
In response to the question:
“How are you?”
We do not expect the verbose.
If the answer is somewhat surprising,
Runs to more than a second or two,
We stand there impatiently waiting
For the respondee to hurry on through.
When we ask after others we don’t mean it.
We’re really just being polite.
But if you don’t want to know,
Please don’t ask me.
Or I might tell you I’m not alright
